If you are new to the investing world, there are people out there who will try and scam you. This is true with every aspect of life, and the world of investing is no exception. If there is money to be made or stolen you can rest assure there are crooks out there trying to find a way to steal yours.

There is no safer place than to keep your money in a savings account at the local bank. As long as the bank is FDIC insured your money will be protected by the government. A limit of $250,000 does apply to these types of accounts. So if you have over that amount you should not place all of it in the same account. A savings account is a type of investment because your money is earning interest as it sits there. The bank will use it to make loans and give you a specified percentage rate in return for letting them use it. At the moment rates are not that favorable and many are considering other investment options.

Placing your money with a stock broker is another alternative. There are many online brokers that will allow you to direct your funds into a variety of different asset classes. When looking at a broker make sure that they too offer insurance from SIPC. Brokers who will not insure your accounts can potentially be scams that will take your money and run. Using a broker based in your own country is also advised. If the broker asks for money to be transferred to an overseas account, red flags should go off in your head. There are many reputable brokers here in the U.S. that are available to the retail investor. Going online and researching the various brokers that are available is a good idea. Many will have both full service financial advisors, to help you out, or let you choose the stocks you would like to buy yourself. Your investment experience and knowledge will help you make the decision as to how much help you require form your stock broker.

Like stock brokers, currency brokers will offer you as an investor the opportunity to invest in the currency markets. There are many online foreign currency scams on the internet, mostly revolving around computer programs that will make you money. Please do not trust these money making systems, as they will not make you the money as promised. The same basic principles hold true when trying to find a good currency broker. Do your research online and read the many forex broker reviews that are available. These reviews will help you to see the pros and cons that other investors had with the brokers that are available to the retail investor. Make sure your broker, either stock or currency, has representative available for you to speak with by telephone. Making sure that there office has a building headquarters is one way of making sure that the broker is legitimate. As mentioned before many of the scams revolve around brokers that work from third world countries and offer no brokerage service at all.

Giving your money away to someone who claims to be an investment advisor can also lead you to lose money. Besides the various brokers that are available to the retail investor there are other types of investments, such as hedge funds. Hedge fund can promise to offer greater returns, however they do not always do this in reality. These funds are the riskiest types of investments when it comes to fraud. Make sure you know of other investors who have money with the fund before you invest any of your own. The fund manager can be gone the next day with your cash never to be seen again, it has happened before and will most likely happen again. If you take your time and do the appropriate research there should be no issue on how reputable your local bank, broker or fund manager is. If as an investor you do not feel confident or comfortable giving your money to a particular institution then do not do it. Ask as many questions as you need answered for them to earn your business

Mutual fund holdings are vital information to fund investors when evaluating a manager’s performance as reported. Without knowing what a fund’s holdings are, investors can neither fully appreciate why a manager has performed well, nor can they thoroughly come to grasp about any poor results. Even if a fund is doing ok, investors may decide that the fund investments are overlapping with their other portfolios or not in line with their own investing goals and want to relocate the money elsewhere. But without access to a set of complete information on a fund’s portfolio, investors are basically kept in the dark and can’t decide for themselves on any of those personal investment decisions.

What Does the Law Require
By law, mutual funds are required to release complete portfolio holdings only twice a year. For actively managed funds, in the interim of 6 months, their holdings could have been turned over many times and the information at investors’ hands can never be real time, live feeds, considering today’s online technology has made instant exchange of information nothing but possible. In fact, the decades-old securities law enacted such a rule because of the concern that fund companies couldn’t afford to mail out a report every day.

Objection to Frequent Portfolio Disclosure
Chief concern among mutual fund companies is that timely portfolio updates of fund holdings can tip off their intentions to the market. It may cause potential front run on a fund where other traders can buy shares ahead of the fund and drive up prices, while the fund is still taking the time to build up positions in a stock. But supporters of full, on-time publication of portfolio holdings argue that the hidden reason why funds are reluctant to do anything beyond what the law requires is that managers might be concerned about revealing questionable trading practice in any disclosure. Funds do a lot of window-dressing trading close to quarter end to boost performance and increase management compensation.

Other Concerns by Financial Advisers
Some financial advisory don’t think that requiring more disclosures of a fund’s holdings is a good idea. They contend that overwhelming information can lead investors to losing their long-term focus and becoming obsessed with fund trading. The advantage of having accessible information as claimed by some investors may be overblown. They also observe that people who are trading stocks and looking for ideas are more interested in getting a first look at a fund’s holdings.

Amid all the conflicting viewpoints, some mutual fund companies are stepping up to make more frequent disclosures on their portfolio holdings. More quarterly updates are now available, with monthly reports on top holdings. To the delight of some investors, a fund named OpenFund lets investors view active trading on its website, while others post weekly trading commentaries by fund managers. A standard monthly reporting ought to be possible if the idea of leaving out sensible trading information is made to consensus.

For those of you considering investing in gold as a preventative measure against paper currencies and the mismanagement of governments, the best loved and unarguable top gold ETF to buy is GLD – also called SPDR Gold Shares. The unique feature of this Gold ETF centers on its relationship literally matching the valuation of gold. Although one could reasonably assume this to be standard, where ETF’s, or Exchange Traded Funds are concerned, it is certainly not. Numerous ETF’s operate with futures contracts that are generally less predictable and so riskier investments. Although past performance is no guarantee of future results, gold ETF funds like GLD, prove to be a less risky option than alternative commodity investments, particularly for those that understand well what is happening with the economic picture.

There are those investors who feel confidant that deflation has already begun, and that would prove to be gold bearish. A few of them will indicate television advertising, claiming that after the public catches on to an investment, it is time to sell. Yet different investors believe that because of the government running the printing presses overtime to create more money, the value of gold will keep going up. Gold more or less proves to be protection against a declining dollar, and its performance is based on other country’s currencies and economies as much as it is on those of ours. Could our economy perform sufficiently for us to build up our currency’s value, or might we have to maintain a weaker dollar to be able to compete internationally? Perhaps more involved than before in history, this involves a complex series of actions and reactions.

Despite all of the background noise going on, a constant concept emerges. The majority of both gold bears and bulls concur with gold maintaining the upward trend over both the medium time frame, as well as internationally. A number of investors today feel certain that one day the specter of hyperinflation will rear its ugly head, causing GLD, and also UGL (ProShares Ultra Gold), to both be solid investment ideas for all long term minded investors.

When any company makes a profit, the directors may divide the profit among the stockholders as ‘dividends’ or they may decide to use it to expand the business. Dividends may be paid only out of the company’s profits only. When profits are used to expand the business, the directors and stockholders may decide to issue more stock to show that there is more money invested in the business. The new stock will be divided among the stockholders as a ‘stock dividend’. Hence, stock dividend could be conveniently defined as the distribution of extra shares among the stockholders or investors of the company.

Many companies and financial institutions offer shares to the investors in order to generate money for the organization. The investors also put money in the organization through these shares. Such an investment is greatly dependent on the reputation and performance of the organization. Hoping to get good returns in the form of cash dividends or stock dividends is the main reason behind making these investments. There are many advantages of stock dividend. Firstly, no tax is levied on such dividends, much to the relief of the stockholder.

In case a stockholder earns some stock dividends from the company he invested in, he or she is not expected to pay any type of tax on that until he or she decides to sell the additional shares. Secondly, the stock dividends earned by the stockholder enables him or her with additional ownership in the organization, which in turn may prove profitable to the stockholder in the future. The stock dividends are given to a particular stockholder depending on the number of shares he or she holds. How lucrative a certain stock dividend is going to be; again depends on the performance of the organization in the market.

I might add here that I am the stockholder in a few companies of good standing in the commercial market. I have always been a little skeptical before investing in any stock or shares. Somehow, going by the sea changes that have been happening in the economic scenario, I have always opted for cash dividend instead of stock dividend. Cash dividend is one way of ensuring that you have ready cash on your hand at the end of the year based on the company’s earnings. This money can be utilized for reinvesting, if need be. What if you opt for stock dividend, and suddenly the company does not perform well and reports sick, all your shares will nothing but worthless pieces of paper. You will have to again wait with bated breath and hope that the company is revived with a rehabilitation package in place.

There’s no doubt about it, the stock market can be a fantastic way to make money. Historical analysis shows that the rate of return on money invested in the stock market is, on average, better than that of money invested in government bonds, certificates of deposit, and most other investment options. However, it can also be a fantastic way to lose money if you are not careful, so that’s why it is absolutely vital that you know what you are doing before you go out and drop down some money for what is, in fact, nothing more than a few bits of information stored in a computer somewhere on Wall Street.

The stock market can be broken down into sectors based on the types of stocks for sale, such as blue chip stocks, industrial stocks, technology stocks, or financial stocks. The financial sector is a popular area for investment, but as with all stock market investments, and indeed all of life, it is important to know what your are buying before you buy it. What that means for you is that you need to research the companies that you are interested in.

All companies in the United States are required to send financial information to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which posts this information on its web site. By looking through the financial filings of companies, you find out a lot about them. Some things to look at are: how much the company owes, how much it makes per year, and how much it has paid out to investors in the past in the form of dividends. You can find out more about what to look for in these financial filings by going to your local library and checking out any book on the stock market.

There’s more to the stock market than just this, however. One thing that is hammered into the heads of all business school graduates is this: diversify, diversify, diversify. Think about it: if all of your money is tied up in one company, and that company goes belly-up, you have no hope. But if you have spread out your investments over many different companies, then you will take only a small loss. Something else to watch out for is becoming too attached to your stocks. We all have our favorite companies, but if your pet stock is showing losses quarter after quarter, it may be time to bail. It’s better to take a small loss now than to wait until that favorite company is selling for pennies per share.

There is much more to playing the stock market than just this, of course, but if you follow these few simple tricks, you’ll be well on your way to success.

Typically the months of August and September are the two least to make gains. As people are going on their last minute vacation before the summer is over, the stock markets seem to take a break. The volume is lower than any other time of the year.

As you can see by the last couple of weeks, the markets have seen a stall in gains compared to the other four months. The overall markets are holding to their levels, but quite few good stocks have come down from where they were just a little while ago. I don’t expect them to stay there very long. At the present time, the markets are showing that they are at a good resistance level. I also see that it’s more of a bull than a bear scenario going on.

The correction in the markets seem to be happening on the individual stock levels, so I’m getting ready to go all-in. I see some of the companies that I’ve been recently coming down to levels I consider a good entry point. If the stocks do fall back after I start building a position, that won’t be a problem since I always buy in increments.

So my question to you is… Are you ready to get in (if you’re sitting on the sidelines), or build a bigger position in the companies that you own already? Do your research on those companies now, so when the time is right to get in, you will know which ones will be a great investment. If you are up more than 20% in a stock already, you might want to take profit now and get back in after the pull-back.

Who would have thought that this could have happened so soon? Either way, it was reached. The DOW close above 9000 (9069.29 to be exact). The S&P 500 has been on a tear, closing at 976.29. Lets not forget that the NASDAQ is now at 1973.60. The past two weeks of trading have been great for the markets.
.
With that being said, what are we to expect in the coming weeks? If you’ve been listening to the talk on the street, you’ve heard both sides of the possibilities. “It’s only going to get higher” or “the markets are going to correct themselves”. Those are the only two choices.
.
After listening to all the opinions that where flying today, I would have to agree that the markets are due for a correction. How can it not? I don’t know about you, but I don’t really see a reason to be all optimistic about the stock market. Add on to the fact that many traders and investors have made a lot of money in the last four months. There will be some profit taking very soon.
.
With all the talk about health care and the Cap and Trade bill, if these two bills pass, corporations are going to find it hard to keep making the earnings that the investors want to see. The taxes that will be imposed onto these industries are going to break them as well as the country’s GDP.
.
In the last few months I’ve made some great gains in the markets and I’m not willing to give them back anytime soon. At this time I’m sitting more than half my portfolio on the sidelines, while I wait for the other shoe to drop (and it will). Don’t get me wrong, I do believe that there will be some gains to be made in many other sectors and that’s why I’m watching the tech sector. They (tech sector) don’t have the government issues to deal with, like most of the others ones.
.
Which ever way you plan on playing the markets in the coming weeks, do your due diligence.

I’ve been busy this week with many things, so keeping an eye on the stock market hasn’t been easy for me. Well this afternoon I’ve had the time to see the progress for the past few days and I’m amazed at the gains that have been made this week by the major indicies.
.
I told you in a recent post that I jumped out of basically everything until the markets correct themselves again. We’ve had too much of a run up and I’m skeptical. Looking back on the past few days that I missed, I noticed that there were good opportunities to make money on stocks that I sold and they went on a roller coaster ride afterward.
.
The one I want to talk about is Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd. (NYSE:AEM), a stock that was as high as $62 only five weeks ago. I made the right choice to sell off my position. After it corrected by 10% I bought a small position back. I let it just sit there not bothering to pick up more as it continued to drop. Unknown to me, I wasn’t paying attention to what the stock did this week as it dropped down to below $47.50. If I was aware of the situation, I would have back the truck up so fast to grab shares at that price. That was Monday morning and now the price per share is $55 (as of 3:45pm). A 16% gain in just three trading days.
.
In all the times that I’ve traded AEM, I’ve always made money. This would have been great to profit from, but I’m not going to drive myself crazy because I didn’t get into this play. There will always be more opportunities to make money, but if you want to stay sane while trading stocks, you can’t sit there and think of the “what if’s”.
.
Agnico Eagle has been trading within a range of $45 to $60 (which is a nice swing gap) this entire calendar year. When the price drops below $50 I buy quite a bit, as it goes above $55 I prepare to sell. This week was a good opportunity to do exactly that and I’m OK with the fact that I missed it.
.
Try to keep that in mind as you go through your portfolio.

What a difference a day makes. Last night I posted about NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE:NRG). A company that I’ve been trading for the last month or so. I’ve made some nice gains and I still feel the company’s stock will continue to rise considering the alternative energy needs in this country.
.
Something that I did over look in the post is that NRG Energy is in a middle of a hostile take over bid from the country’s largest nuclear power company, Exelon (NYSE:EXC). In October, Exelon offered 0.485 of one of its shares for every NRG share. Many of the NRG investors were not pleased with the offer and stated that Exelon had to raise it’s bid for the independent power producer.
.
News came out this morning that the company will raise it’s offer by about 12%. The issue is now is that NRG’s stock price has risen above the offering price from Exelon. So now Analyst are suggesting that it means that Exelon would most likely have to materially raise it’s bid to get NRG shareholders support.
.
At the close of last night (July, 2009), Exelon’s stock price closed at $51.56, which puts it’s bid for NRG at $25.01 a share. NRG shares closed at $26.05 yesterday.
.
NRG’s stock price opened Thursday at $25.30 and has dropped as low as $24.88. It has bounced back a little, but after today jobless claims and other economic data releases today. I don’t expect any stock to do really good today. We are going into a three day holiday weekend so let the rest of this eek play out on it’s on and see what bargains we’ll have next week.
.
Happy Independence Day.

A little over a month ago I started looking for a new speculative stock to trade (oppose to invest in) and I happen to stumble over a company that is in the electric utility sector, but because it is mainly a nuclear play, I thought it would be a decent opportunity. I looked around at other companies that are also trying to expand their nuclear plant output, but this one stuck in my mind.
.
I invested a small amount (like I always do on speculative stocks) in the company after reading their earnings reports and reading the transcripts from their conference calls. Since then the stock price has moved up over 30% in just 5 weeks.
.
What really made me think that I had to write a post on it, was the fact that the company was profiled on a CNBC special this week titled Nuclear Option. In the show there was a lot of positive talk about the use of nuclear power being used in this country. There hasn’t been a nuclear power plant built in the United States in over thirty years, but now there are two being built as I type this post. One in Texas and the other in Maryland.
.
The company that I’m referring to is NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE:NRG). The company looks good to me and I will be buying more of it on the dips. I do expect it to lose some value because of profit takers as well as the overall market taking it down some as the DOW and the economy take a roller-coaster ride throughout the remaining part of the year. The chart looks healthy and with the price of oil expected to go back up, it will continue to rise.
.
As with any stock you look to invest in or trade, you need to do your own research to see if it’s right for you.
.
Happy Trading.
